Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

I'm having trouble signing up for your free newsletters. What should I do?

On some versions of Internet Explorer, the newsletter sign up buttons don't appear or don't work properly. However, all you have to do is type your name into the green box and press Enter, then complete the subscription process. To learn more and sign up, go to the Candler's Classroom Connections page.

What are Power Packs and Mini Packs?

Power Packs are digital ebooks that you can purchase and download right away. They are not print books, but you can print them out on your own or read them on your computer. Mini Packs are smaller and less expensive than Power Packs, but they are individual lessons or files rather than complete books. Create a file folder called Laura's Ebooks and download everything into that folder. You can use the materials immediately and you avoid shipping expenses. You can also find discounts for these materials by signing up for the free Candler's Classroom Connections newsletter.

How are Power Packs and Mini Pack different from the File Cabinet resources?

The materials in the File Cabinet are a random collection of free printables from my classroom, most of which do not have directions. Power Packs are digital ebooks that you purchase and download. The activities are fully explained with all blackline masters needed to implement the activities. Furthermore, most of the Power Pack lessons and printables have been field-tested by dozens of teachers around the world.

Is it possible to preview your Power Packs before buying?

If you sign up for Candler's Classroom Connections newsletters or join the Teaching Resources Facebook page, you'll occasionally receive offers to download free preview versions of the books. If you decide to accept those offers, the email address you use to sign up may be used to contact you in the future about the book you previewed. You may also be added to the newsletter subscriber list if you are not already a member. You can unsubscribe at any time, and your email address will never be sold or given to anyone else for any other purpose. Clicking on the Add to Cart button for free previews means you accept these terms. Please be aware that the current free download system only allows 100 downloads per day, so if you receive an error message you'll have to try again the next day (any time after midnight Mountain Standard Time). Free previews are popular downloads, so you might have to return to the page several times before you can download the book.

Where can I get directions for the printables in the File Cabinet?

Some of the printables include directions within the PDF file. Also, you can subscribe to Candler's Classroom Connections to obtain directions for some of the activities. Every two weeks I send out a newsletter with free printables and directions for how to implement the activities. The printables are placed on the site, but the directions can only be found in the newsletter.

How can I get the files in Word format so that I can modify them?

Most of these files are not available in a format that you can modify. They were created in Microsoft Publisher and have been converted to PDF format so that everyone can view and print them. In the past, when I tried to make Publisher files available, I received emails from people who wanted to know why they couldn't view the files. Also, Publisher files are huge and take up more storage space on the site. Because this practice seemed to cause more problems than it solved, I've decided to limit my sharing to PDF versions of documents. The only exception to that is that I sometimes make Publisher versions available to newsletter subscribers. To become a subscriber, go to the CCC Sign Up page.

I'm looking for a certain printable from your old site. How can I find it?

You can use the menus at the top of the page or use the search engine in the green box. Just type your topic into the search engine and it will search the File Cabinet and Strategies sections.

I’m a newsletter subscriber. Why can’t I find the page that has the free items
promised to subscribers?

Those items are not available to the public. In order to get to these exclusive free books, you have to follow a link from one of the bi-weekly newsletters and bookmark that page on your site. That information is also available to Facebook fans. To become a fan, click on the fan link on the home page, www.lauracandler.com.

What are my payment options when ordering?

The easiest payment method is to use PayPal which process credit cards or takes money from your PayPal account. For other payment options including school purchase orders, visit the ordering page.

I love your Power Packs and would like my whole school to use them.
Is it okay to send the files to other teachers?

Power Packs are copyrighted just like print books, and the purchase of a single Power Pack is for use in a single classroom. Sharing the files is a violation of intellectual property rights. So if you want to share the materials with other teachers, please check out the site license options. Thanks for understanding.

Do you do workshops in other states besides North Carolina?

Yes, I'll be happy to do a workshop in another state at the invitation of a school or district. At this point in time, I'm only hosting my public workshops in North Carolina. Email me if you are interested in having me or my colleague Pat Calfee come to your district to teach a math or literacy workshop.

How did you get your website business started?

Check out the About page to discover the answer to that question! It was a long but exciting process, and I've enjoyed every bit of the journey!

Who are the students in the photos?

The children pictured on my site are my own students. I’m a real classroom teacher and those are real 4th or 5th graders engaged in the activities described on my site. Those pictures were taken during the last two school years and I’ll be updating them from time to time. And, yes, I do have signed permission forms from each child’s parents! :-) They were happy to participate in this project.

I’m having trouble viewing the drop down menus, and some pages appear
to have problems. What’s wrong?

The site was designed to take advantage of the latest browser functionality. It is best viewed with Internet Explorer 8 or Mozilla Firefox, which both can be downloaded and installed for free. However, if you don't want to upgrade or change browsers, you can get to everything on the site by using the Site Map or clicking on the main link at the top of each menu option. The drop down menus are nice but not essential for navigation.
