Caring Classrooms Contest: Striding Toward a Cure

Caring Classrooms Contest: Striding Toward a Cure

The Caring Classrooms Giving Page on DonorsChoose was founded in 2013, and since that time we have helped hundreds of teachers receive funding for classroom materials and basic supplies. Over the years our community has grown to over 10,000 supporters, and together our efforts have resulted in more than $1.2 million in funding for public schools in the United States!

Lisa Douglas and I are the co-admins for Caring Classrooms, and we’ve recently been discussing ways that our community can have an even bigger impact. When we learned that one of our members will be participating in the Denver Susan G. Komen 3-Day to fight breast cancer, we knew we had found a worthy cause to support! Sandy Bogis will be participating in this 60-mile walk for the 10th time in September. She must raise the $2,300 entrance fee by August 1st, and she’s been able to raise about half that amount so far.

We know the Caring Classrooms Community will want to join us in helping Sandy raise the rest of her entrance fee, so Lisa and I have planned a very special contest for our members! Prizes include at least two spots on our giving page and eight $10 DC donations! Also, the first 20 teachers who donate at least $5 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation via Sandy’s page will receive a $5 donation to the DC project they submit on the entry form!

Before I explain how the contest works, I wanted to share why we think breast cancer awareness and research is such a worthy cause to support.

Why Our Support Matters

Did you know that an estimated one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime? Most of us know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and many of us have lost family members and friends to this relentless disease. In fact, earlier this year our community members personally experienced cancer’s devastating effects when we lost Francie Kugelman to complications from breast cancer treatment. Francie was one of the founders of our community, and after being diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago, she continued to work tirelessly to help teachers in our community receive funding for their projects.

Fundraising events like Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Susan G. Komen 3-Day generate millions of dollars for breast cancer research, and as a result, breast cancer survival rates have increased dramatically in recent years. However, there’s still much work to be done. Sandy will be doing her part by lacing up her sneakers and walking 60 miles in 3 days; the least we can do is to donate generously to support her efforts!

Survivors, Warriors, and Angels

Sandy is walking in memory of her mother whom she lost to breast cancer, but also to honor those who have survived breast cancer and the warriors who bravely fight on. Sandy’s backpack carries a collection of pink and white ribbons with the names of those she is honoring during this event. Light pink ribbons have the names of breast cancer survivors, hot pink ribbons have the names of warriors, and white ribbons have the names of the angels we have lost to breast cancer. If you would like Sandy to carry the names of your loved ones, please fill out this Google form.

Contest Details and Guidelines

      1. The contest will run from July 21st through July 31st, and a new winner will be randomly selected each day for 10 days.
      2. At the time of each drawing, one of two prizes will be awarded. If a spot on the Caring Classrooms giving page is available and the winner has submitted an eligible DC project, we will add the project to our giving page. Eligible projects need $250 or less and expire after Sept. 30th. If a spot is not available, the winner will receive a $10 DC donation to the project instead.
      3. If you’d like to participate, scroll to the bottom of this post, log into Rafflecopter, and review the entry choice options and directions.
      4. Next, donate at least $5 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation via Sandy’s donation page
      5. After you donate, fill out the Rafflecopter entry form below.  The only required entry is donating $5 to Sandy’s page, but you can earn extra points (chances to win) for completing the additional entries. We especially encourage you to share Sandy’s donation page link with others who might want to support this cause.
      6. We are asking you to enter the amount you donated to Sandy’s page in Rafflecopter so that we can tally the amount we raise during this event. However, your donation amount will not impact your chances of winning, and we will not share your donation amount publicly.
      7. You may only enter once, no matter how many times you donate.
      8. Winners will be notified by email. We may also announce the names of the winners on the Caring Classrooms Facebook page.
